Hip-Hop Mourns the Loss of Irv “Gotti” Lorenzo at 54

The music world is mourning the loss of legendary producer and record executive Irv “Gotti”Lorenzo, who passed away on February 5th in New York City at the age of 54. Best known as the founder of Murder Inc. Records, Gotti played an instrumental role in shaping the sound of early 2000s hip-hop and R&B, launching the careers of industry giants such as DMX, Ja Rule, and Ashanti.

His family confirmed his passing to the media but did not disclose the cause of death. However, reports indicate that Gotti suffered another stroke earlier this week, which may have contributed to his untimely passing.

Born Irving Domingo Lorenzo Jr., Gotti was a visionary in the music industry. He started as a DJ in Queens before making his mark as a producer and A&R executive at Def Jam, where he was pivotal in DMX breakout success. In 1999, he launched Murder Inc. Records, a label that dominated the charts with hit records from Ja Rule, Ashanti, Lloyd, and more. Despite facing legal battles and industry challenges, Gotti remained a respected force in hip-hop, later branching out into television and film production.

Beyond his contributions to music, Gotti was a devoted father and family man. He is survived by his three children, Angie, Sonny, and Jonathan Wilson; his mother, Nee Nee Lorenzo; his sisters, Tina and Angie; and his brother, Chris Lorenzo.

His impact on hip-hop culture will be remembered for generations, as his influence continues to resonate through the artists and music he helped bring to the forefront.
